We were recently invited to check out the newly renovated workshop of the Fataar brothers from Alfa Bodyworks in Athlone Industria. Since we haven’t seen them in ages a visit was highly overdue and we were keen to check out the much talked about workshop for a tour. Alfa Bodyworks was established in 1997 by Moeneeb and Shameeg and specialize exclusively in the fields of panel beating, chassis straightening and spray-painting. They are member of SAMBRA which see's them have the highest possible grading for bodywork repairs. [more]

The sweet smell of racing fuel is in the air as we announce to all petrol-heads and Sim gamers the inaugural G-Force Challenge. The only event that will see racers compete for the title over two racing disciplines in the form of Simulation Racing & Karting, with the prizes valued at over R10 000. Open to the public, the event will take the racers through a tough qualifying phase, where only the top 10 individuals will make it into the final. Once you’re in the final, you will be set to battle man and machine for the grand prize and The G-Force Challenge Champion title for 2013. [more]

Usually when a new version of a game is released you wonder to yourself, can it get any better than this?! Well in Gran Turismo 5 we were slightly disappointed and thought yeah they could of gotten it a bit better especially since it took ages to actually be released to the public after they first announced its coming. Well, they’ve announced that Gran Turismo 6 is coming out soon, and looking at the video it seems they have closed the gap and gotten things right this time. [more]

First off, this is by no means a ‘Top 10’, but rather a personal recall of the emerging drift scene in the Cape some ten, maybe more, years ago. Ok, with the disclaimer stuff out the way…let’s move on! The topic actually came about after having a chat with my buddy Nabeel who mentioned that Herman Mahnke, as far as he could recall, was the pioneer of drifting in Cape Town. To some degree, that may be true, but I beg to differ based on my personal experience at Killarney raceway from the multitude of events I have covered there over the years. This got me thinking of a few other names from the past, which immediately got me digging through the Raceweb archives from days gone by. This brought a flood of memories streaming back and based on that, join me on this trip down memory racing lane as we visit the tyre shredding days of yesteryear. [more]

With the South African drift scene unifying under one banner this year, the SupaDrift series has been exploding in more ways than one. It’s with that same excitement that we decided to attend the third round of SupaDrift at the all new Dezzi Circuit in Port Shepstone, KZN. Cape Town, in comparison to Gauteng is rather starved for hardcore drift action. We don’t get to see it that often, and the selection of cars are limited, and we basically only have Killarney to do it at. This trip would see us being able to experience a vast range of never before seen cars at an all new amazing circuit. We love a change of scenery, from the stage to the performers. Being excited was an understatement.[more]

Always starving for some Circuit action, RACEWEB headed to the Pro tour at Killarney. Karting colleague and long-time friend Sataar Osman was out in his Opel Astra for some Clubman’s Fun. Sadly the car overheated in Heat 1 and had to be retired early. Turn 4 saw its fair share of "farming" - claiming Shift (GTi challenge citi golf) and Sataar (Dalmans Midas Opel Astra) in Friday's practice. Sataar says it was the first time one of his cars seriously injured him on the track straining his arm and shoulder when the steering violently ripped one way then the other during his "off".[more]

Now as many of you may already know what a “sleeper” car is, I am still going to elaborate a little for those that don’t. Imagine pulling up to a set of “robots”… we’ll say Killarney’s start line lights (for the interest of public safety, because racing on public roads is ILLEGAL! Duh!)… at a Street2Strip event in your somewhat quick vehicle. Let’s say you own a modified M3 or Mercedes AMG… pretty much any car with status and some poke. An unsuspecting car pulls up next to you, no visible mods, no loud exhaust, and you think to yourself, there’s no way in hell that little thing is going to beat me! The lights go green and that very same unsuspecting car leaves you for...[more]

Over 45 of South Africa’s top drivers will be making their way to the Dezzi Raceway in Port Sheptone on the
11th of May, to compete in the AutoTrader SupaDrift Series. The Port Shepstone stop will be the third-round of the
nine-stop national series. It will be the first time KZN will be hosting this championship, which is in its inaugural year.
The event is set to thrill visitors with a bigger pool of drivers and better level of drifting from the club-level competitions that took place last year. This is thanks to three of South Africa’s biggest drifting clubs joining forces to form one, Motor Sport South Africa endorsed, championship.

I probably know Mike Cook for the last 5 years or so from racing indoor karts together. We’ve raced many a battle on track before, and besides being an absolute gentleman in the true sense, he is extremely modest. But it was only recently that I found out about Mike’s hidden talents… with a paintbrush. Knowing I was in the motorsport industry and both of us having a passion for racing, coupled with my love for photography, specifically of cars, he mentioned he had done a few paintings of various F1 cars and some other stuff. I was intrigued and insisted to see them. [more]

I’ve driven many a 3 series BMW before, from the much sought after collector’s item 325is, M3’s be it e36, e92 and even the new F30 (non M3) model. But there’s one particular M3 that has eluded me, until now. The e46 M3. Sure I have sat shotgun in many, but not actually been behind the wheel, and with the CSL model being one of my all time favourite M3’s, the time had to come sooner or later. Opportunity presented itself to me when I had the chance to drive not only an e46 model M3, but this beast of a machine, the fully prepared track spec M3 of Junaid Slamang. There’s no other place to drive this brute but Killarney. I fear our normal public roads would not be able to handle its rubber claws and only crumble upon hard acceleration. [more]

It really had been forever since I did a proper track day. Lots of shotgun rides, loads of Mickey Mouse Gymkhana's and many MSA and S2S drags, but literally 10 years since I did an actual track day. I am always preaching to the "Street Racers" about taking their cars to the track and racing in a controlled environment. But I really can't stress it enough, even attending a Gymkhana - I guarantee you that you'll learn more about your car in those two or three runs than you will ever learn in normal street driving. It was only about a week ago when CapeStance announced on their site that there was going to be a second Slamometer event. It may have been short notice but word of this upcoming event spread far and wide rather quickly since their first one was a great success, even though it was held in a very much hidden away private business park in Platterkloof. Arriving at the new venue in King Edward Street, Parow, I had my concerns. Like… is my car going to be safe parked here? Should I carry all my gear with me? I felt like I was in downtown Nigeria! It wasn’t very reassuring. None the less I found a parking spot, got my gear and started walking to what inevitability was going to be a great car event. [more]

Owning your own house is a great thing, though it comes with some ups and downs. On the up side you have the freedom to do whatever you want, but on the down side you have the responsibility of maintaining your fine establishment. But, that comes with the territory and you don’t mind a little “up keep” at the end of the day. So
you’re enjoying your house… what’s next? Invite all your friends over to enjoy it with you, house party! Everyone comes over, they have a blast, good company, good food, good music and at the end of the night, or next morning, everyone leaves and then, YOU have to clean up. [more]

This event started life back in 2009 when D1S (Drift Squad) used to practice regularly at Club @mospheer in Lansdowne. Even then, it was a game changing affair. But that goes without saying because it was hosted by Drift Squad. Lights, camera, action! They’re all about putting on a great show and entertaining the crowds. Things have moved on since then, bigger venues, Killarney Race Track, and bigger names such as the stars and their cars. [more]

Thrills and spills characterised a magnificent day’s racing under sunny skies at Killarney, Cape Town for round two of the Super Series national championship roadshow. Local hero Johan Fourie (Afrox BMW) claimed the first win of the Bridgestone Production Car event as he came home one and a half seconds ahead of teammate Etienne van der Linde. Third, and glued to the BMW’s exhaust, was Melvill Priest in the Meuller Sport Audi RS4. [more]

The organisers of the Knysna Simola Hillclimb regretfully announce that the 2013 event, due to run from 17-19 May, has been cancelled for this year. All other events in the Speed Festival have also been cancelled excepting the Knysna Motor Show, which is a stand-alone event and will be held on 4 May. The event, which grew tremendously in the four years that it was run and had become one of South Africa’s premier motorsport events, has been unable to secure a title sponsor following the withdrawal of its previous sponsor, necessitating this decision. Seven teams lined up for the start of the indoor karting league in Cape Town at Kenilworth Karting on Tuesday 26 February that was dominated start to finish by Raceweb, with No Fear second and AM Racing completing the top three. There were plenty of new faces in the league, with four new teams out of the seven that took part in the race. Raceweb (returning after a year out), No Fear and Redline Racing were the established teams, and were joined by newcomers Auto Magneto (AM) Racing, Team Play, Maniacs and Sunworx. Not all of the drivers in the new teams were novices, however, as some of the drivers from 2012 who found themselves without a team joined up with the 2013 entrants. The evening started with a 15 minute qualifying session, which established a starting order that would remain almost unchanged throughout the race. [more]

Dave Charlton, one of South Africa’s most successful and respected racing drivers, died in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon, February 24. He was 76. He won the first race he ever competed in (appropriately at the historic East London grand prix circuit in 1960) and also won his last (a charity celebrity race at Zwartkops Raceway in 1990). He competed in 13 World Championship Formula One Grands Prix and was South Africa’s champion driver for six successive years, from 1970 to 1975. David William Charlton - or Charlie, as he was affectionately known by his friends...[more]

Never seen before from this onboard view, David Coulthard races against James May and Jeremy Clarkson in their Renaults around the track after giving them a massive head start. If you liked Fast 5 then surely you've been waiting, like us, for this, Fast & Furious 6. The story goes like this...

Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete. Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in...[more]

Driving… what is it about driving a car that us petrol heads enjoy so much? The feeling of being in control of a vehicle at speed…? Or is it the sensation of lateral g-force when you go around a bend? The feedback you get when you turn the steering wheel and feel the mechanical grip levels of a car’s tyres… The sheer speed of things when you put your foot down and experience yourself sinking back into the seat. The sound of the machine you’re driving as it climbs up the rev range… or one reason could be that specific piece of road you decide to drive on. That could make the whole experience of driving so much better. [more]

It’s not often one gets handed the keys to a fully prepared drift car, let alone to specifically go sideways in it. Dylan Cothill is a brave man. We featured his fully imported S14 Silvia a few issues back before it had a full respray in black… I must say, I do prefer it in its new tuxedo. It’s a very stealthy look all in black, giving one the immediate impression it’s a weapon of some sort. The new ROTA Grids look great too, not that the old rims didn’t, but these just look better. Dylans done quite a bit since we last featured the car including a full motor rebuild to the SR20DET which see’s it being fully blue printed and the internals upgraded to Arias forged pistons, ACL bearings, Redline head gasket and it even has a reworked head.
