Fireball Run

With almost 1000 BHP (760kw) the roar of the RB26DETT (TT meaning Twin Turbo) Nissan Skyline really is unlike any other car. The Play station phenomena, taken one step too far in this incarnation, is something that can make any Gran Turismo junkie foam at the mouth.

Nissan Skyline GTR R34

For starters, this car has a built in G-Meter! Can you imagine the kind of trouble you’d get into trying to prove to your buddies you could actually take it over 1 g on your way to the local Seven Eleven? Then, of course, there’s the sound. Intoxicating to say the least, supercharged 350Z’s sound tame by comparison. I’ve always enjoyed the roar of a liberated straight 6, but back that up with the chuffing of twin turbos and you have the stuff dreams are made of. Seeing this car was definitely the highlight of my day at the Fireball Run 2006.

Ultima GTR
The fastest car of the day was the ULTIMA GTR and it managed an unbelievable time of 1:18 on semi slick tires. Considering a Formula GTI single seater does 1:18, this car truly is something special. Next was the Noble M400, with its driver managing a 1:23.
The day was not without incident as one of the 944 drivers crashed at turn 3, damaging his car, and hurting his back in the process. The race day was halted for a while, but soon the action re-started with a gaggle of M3 CSLs and a Porsche GT2 mixing it up with the other track specials.

A great day at the track for all and tons of fun for the drivers, now if only I could get one of them to throw me their keys…

See you at the track!
